Synopsis: Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics and produced by Westerly Film Production, Distress is a comedy about a trio of beautiful girls as they set out to revolutionize life at a grungy American university the dynamic leader Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (Carrie MacLemore). They welcome transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton) into their group which seeks to help severely depressed students with a program of good hygiene and musical dance numbers. The girls become romantically entangled with a series of menincluding smooth Charlie (Adam Brody), dreamboat Xavier (Hugo Becker) and the mad frat pack of Frank (Ryan Metcalf) and Thor (Billy Magnussen) who threaten the girls friendship and sanity.

Few films recently have been able to capture my imagination like thisone. With the glut of comic book films and remakes, very few people aremaking original films. I was not expecting much going into this film (Isaw it at a festival). In fact I had not planned on seeing it, but itseemed "different" enough to warrant a watch. Well, I went in notknowing what to expect and came out with a big grin. I was happy I gaveit a shot and was surprised by the other comment on here.
If you want to see something original, that has some break out actors,and is funny, then check out "Damsels in Distress." Days after I leftthe screening, I kept thinking back on the funny lines and comicallyearnest characters. Go in with an open mind and come out with a grin.
IMDb does not allow 8.5 stars, but that's my verdict. This goes intothe category of films I'll be watching again once it hits the theaters.

Stillman's first feature in 13 years investigates the merciless socialrules within a campus: it's fun, as wittily and entertaininglydialogued as his previous efforts, but way more off-beat and darklyscrewballish. It almost plays as an intellectual version of cultfavorite "Heathers" (it might be no coincidence if it also revolvesaround a bunch of co-eds named after flowers), sparing us theB-movieish third act of Michael Lehmann's film. Lots of fun, with amusical twist around the end that might be able to improve the film'schances to cult-ness.
I caught "Damsels in Distress" in Venice, where it was selected out ofcompetition as the closing film for 2011's festival. Audience was quiteappreciative, laughing out loud throughout the whole screening.

It's clear that some reviewers "got" this film and some didn't. Asalways, Stillman delivers with marvelous, laugh-out-loud funnydialogue. This is so rare that that that virtue alone sets it apartfrom the majority of the drivel that passes for conversation in moviescripts these days. You can't tell me that there aren't some one-linersin there that you hear and just *wish* you could have uttered yourselfif only you'd had the wit (Whit?).
The characters are all flawed, some lovably so, some not-just likelife. You're not meant to like all of them, and it's part of thesubtle, social observation of which Stillman is capable that theunlikable characters are not always immediately unlikable. Somecharacters learn from their mistakes and misperceptions, some do not.Again, like life.
The thing that is so winsome about Stillman's movies is that virtuealways triumphs. There is a sweetness to his choice that the goodalways eclipses the bad. It's almost heart-achingly sweet, because weknow that that is not how things usually work out, and yet you findyourself rooting for these flawed, quirky, sometimes idiotic charactersto get out of their own way and allow their better natures to win theday. I've wondered for a long time about the central role of dancing inhis movies, and maybe it's that when you're dancing, it's hard to domuch else, and you become one with music, rhythm, and your dancepartner(s). Perhaps that's what he wants for his characters-to usedance as a vehicle to get out of their own way and lead a happier, lesscomplicated, less tortured existence.
My favorite of his movies will always be "Metropolitan," but this is anexcellent new addition to his oeuvre. We've been waiting for "the newone" for a while, and now that it's here I find it a sheer delight.

I was very much looking forward to this movie, having admired all ofWhit Stillman's previous films, especially his latest, the 1998 "TheLast Days of Disco." So I was beyond disappointed to discover that"Damsels in Distress" is virtually unwatchable. Is it pretentious? Hardto describe it that way since it doesn't seem to be trying foranything. People sit around or walk around or dance around and chatterin a kind of language that appears to be spawned on an alien planet.Greta Gerwig, whom I have liked in a couple of other movies, iscompletely lost and inept spouting the idiot dialogue she's given, andthe problem extends to the entire cast. I laughed out loud exactlyonce. Most of the time I cringed and groaned. The movie is absolutelyawful and a must to avoid unless you have been losing sleep and need tocatch up. No, scratch that. Insomnia is preferable to this debacle.

Painful, self-consciously quirky 'comedy' with no plot, failing to tellthe story of several idiotic, unlikeable characters and their attemptsto find love. One of the 5 worst films I've been unfortunate enough toencounter, and I've seen Sextette and Terror of Tiny Town (look them upand realise the full depths that Damsels In Distress reaches). Thisisn't even bad in the sense of The Room, where at least the results arelaughable - quite the opposite, despite this allegedly being a comedy.The cast is awful, but special mention must go to Greta Gerwig asViolet. On the strength of this un-performance, we can only hope she'snever cast in anything else. Save yourselves! Avoid this movie at allcosts! Spend your time and money doing something more pleasant, likehaving a root canal.

I'm not sure why this film was selected as a special 'Members' Reward'screening for the London Film Festival, as it is very, very American -probably much funnier for those familiar with the culture represented.As it was, the buzz among the audience after the end of the show wasnot enthusiastic.
For my own part, I'm afraid comedies of social embarrassment make meacutely uncomfortable, and I dislike even more situations in whichpretentious, arrogant, ignorant people make fools of themselves byexposing themselves in public: the argument where one girl insists thatXavier must be spelt with a 'zee' (and then her queen-bee friendoverrides her with an even more pretentiously ignorant explanation) isa prime example of what really raised my hackles in this film. It'sjust not the sort of thing I like at all; I don't think there's asympathetic character left by the end, and meanwhile we're supposed tobe spending our time laughing at these cliques and freaks sneering ateach other. I prefer my films more sweet-natured than this.
Because I was cringing so much I felt that the picture also went on fartoo long; views of those who were enjoying it may vary.
